These questions are intended to be used as a group Bible study or for individual study. I wrote them for a study I was doing at my house with a group of guys, and it ended up being a very useful complition of scriptures. So, I thought I would publish it on my website and share it!
1. What is sin?
So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
2. Why do we sin?
For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
3. How do we feel after we sin?
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.
4. How does God feel after we sin?
He knows our every thought, word, and deed
Consider that every sinful thought and word and deed we do is done in the presence of God. David wrote,
O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tounge, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. (Psalm 139:1-4)
He is for us, not against us
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
He suffered for us
looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Take note of two things: 1. He despises the shame. 2. He endured all of this suffering for the joy set before Him — He was thinking about you and me.
5. If we know that God is grieved at our sin just as we are, why do we still continue to sin?
Our fleshly desires produce temptation
But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
Satan opposes us
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
Our hearts are deceitful
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
Santification is a process, not instant
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
6. How does the gospel deal with sin?
The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.
But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
7. Rock of Ages — the difference between “guilt” and “power”
Read the hymn “Rock of Ages” by Augustus Toplady and discuss the difference between guilt and power.
Let the water and the blood, From thy riven side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure, Cleanse me from its guilt and power.
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
8. Does this mean we should ignore our sin?
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Notice how Paul refers to himself as the “foremost” of sinners:
The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.
9. How then should we live?
Preach the gospel to yourself every day
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Confess your shortcomings first to God, then to other believers
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
Trust that the Holy Spirit is working in you and will not give up
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Do everything with in the name of Jesus with thanksgiving
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Ask God to reveal to you where you still fall short and need to grow
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
Love one another
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
